Fire Extinguisher Inspections in Orlando, Florida

A fire extinguisher requires regular inspections to ensure that it is ready for use at all times, in the event of a fire. These periodic inspections can be completed by following these easy steps:

  1. Check for damage to the extinguisher
  2. Check to make sure it is still on the bracket
  3. Check the nitrogen gauge is in the “green zone”
  4. Check the tamper seal is not broker
  5. Report all expired tags, missing extinguishers, damaged or used extinguishers

NFPA 10 Monthly Inspections

Periodic inspection of fire extinguishers shall include a check of at least the following items:
1. Location in designated place.
2. No obstruction to access or visibility.
3. Pressure gauge reading or indicator in the operable range or position.
4. Fullness determined by weighing or hefting for self-expelling-type extinguishers, Cartridge-operated extinguishers, and pump tanks.
5. Operating instructions on nameplate and facing outward.
6. Safety seals and tamper indicators not broken or missing.
7. Examination for obvious physical damage, corrosion, leakage, or clogged nozzle.

OSHA Monthly Inspections

“In §1910.157, OSHA’s standard for portable fire extinguishers. Paragraph (e)(2) of §1910.157 requires that “[p]ortable extinguishers or hose used in lieu thereof under paragraph (d)(3) of this section shall be visually inspected monthly.” In addition, the burden posed by the inspection contemplated by the standard (as defined in §1910.155(c)(27)) is modest: “a visual check of fire protection systems and equipment to ensure that they are in place, charged, and ready for use in the event of a fire.” which is also consistent with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard No. 10, “Portable Fire Extinguishers,” which states in paragraph 6.2.1 of the 2002 edition that: “Fire extinguishers shall be inspected when initially placed in service and thereafter at approximately 30-day intervals.”
