No matter if you’re driving over the road freight, or local LTL; fire safety code still applies. Each city and state has their own fire code requirements, but usually they refer back to NFPA10. This is the case in Orlando, Florida as well, and in this article, we will attempt to shed some light on some items of consideration when selecting a fire extinguisher for your fleet vehicles.
Road accidents are a very serious issue across the globe, and here in Orlando, Florida. Some studies seem to indicate that the quantity of vehicular accidents in the United States is on the rise. Many vehicle accidents result in fires, which can be a very serious situation if not handled properly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2011; there were over one hundred and eighty seven thousand vehicle fires, causing approximately two hundred and fifty deaths.
Selecting a fire extinguisher for your flee vehicles should be based on NFPA 10 and your local regulations. These regulations typically will require the consideration of the types of hazards present. In the case of vehicles, the primary hazards are typically class A, class B, and class C fires.
The typical red fire extinguisher is rated for Class A, B, and C fires, however in addition to considering the types of hazards, one must also consider the size of the potential hazard. Since most fleet vehicles are limited in size to less than 500 square feet, a smaller sized fire extinguisher should be more than sufficient to cover the potential hazards. Of course fire extinguishers are not meant to extinguish large fully involved fires, but rather are designed to extinguish incipient stage fires.
